Japanese Swords

Japanese swords can be traced back to the year 987, with the first steel made swords being imported from China.  Then Nihonto, or more commonly known sword, the Samurai Sword is believed to be the finest cutting weapon ever developed by man.  This Katana style sword is classified as a true art form.

The Tachi sword is another name for a Katana Sword.  The difference is in how the sword is worn.  If hung from the belt with the edge down, it's a Tachi.  It's a Katana when worn edge up and thrust through the girdle.   The Tachi is also considered to be slightly longer and more curved than a traditional Katana style.  There are other popular types of swords as well:

  • Bokken Sword - This is a wooden practice sword used for training purposes.
  • Musashi Sword -  Musashi Miyamoto was a legendary samurai who lived from 1584 to 1645. The Musashi Sword is thought to be a modified Katana designed for this most famous Samurai.  The Nihonto Sword is a style of a Japanese Katana Sword.
  • Naginta Sword - This sword is popular with Samurai women.  It's used to slash with wide circular movements with the butt being used to block or knock opponents off balance.
  • Nodachi/Odachi Sword - This is considered to be a field sword and strongly resembles the European Longsword.
  • Wakizashi Sword - This is a smaller version of the Katana Sword and typically carried by the Samurai along with the Katana.

Chinese Swords

The first Chinese Swords in existence were made of stone.  By about 500 BC, swords began being made from bronze and the art of the Chinese Sword was truly underway.  Here is a partial list of some of the most popular swords for Martial Arts and Collectors alike:

  • Butterfly Swords - These swords were favored by Shaolin Monks because they were discreet to carry.
  • Chang Dao Sword – This was a Longsword style sword used during the Ming Dynasty.
  • Dao Sword – This is a common name for any Broadsword style Chinese Sword.  These style of swords are also commonly referred to as Tao Swords.
  • Dadao Sword – This is a Chinese Saber Sword.
  • Guandao/Kwando Sword – This is a popular Martial Arts Sword that has a heavy blade with a spike at the back.  Some styles also have a notch at the spike's upper base that can catch an opponent's weapon.
  • Hook Sword – This sword has hooks and is a popular Martial Arts Weapon.  They are typically used as a pair.
  • Jian Sword – This sword has double edged and is very similar to a dagger.
  • Nandoa Sword – This sword resembles the blades of the butterfly swords, but are not used in pairs as the butterfly swords are.
  • Niuweidao Sword – Means Ox-Tailed Sword and was a civilian field saber.
  • Piandao Sword – This is the Chinese Scimitar.
  • Pudao Sword – Pudao Sword means assault saber and is a popular military arts training tool.
  • Tai Chi Sword – This double edged sword used in the martial arts style of fighting called Tai Chi.

There were great honor in all these swords and the ceremonial swords were designed with intricate details.  Feng Shui decorating also favors the Asian Swords for décor in home or office spaces.  You'll find some of the finest designs by Paul Chen, Mysashi and many other top name sword designers.
