Survival Knives Make The DifferenceSurvival knives, rescue knives and knowledge are your three most important items to include in your survival gear collection. Whether you are part of a search and rescue team, military or tactical personnel, or an avid outdoor enthusiast, having the right knife at the right time can mean the difference between life and death. For any survival expert a knife is his/her best friend and most closely guarded piece of survival gear. Survival Gear EquipmentMake sure you are well prepared for any search and rescue mission, or outdoor adventure by making sure you have the following items: • A map and a good compass. The Adventure Plus is an excellent choice in compasses, it's seven tools in one all wrapped up in a rugged composite housing. It features super bright LED, liquid filled freeze resistant floating dial compass, digital thermometer, a magnifier, safety mirror, safety whistle, and water tight storage compartment. The whistle is always a good idea to have on hand with a compass or separately. • Flashlight, headlamp, and extra batteries. It's always a good idea to have an extra back-up flashlight as well, such as a compact keychain flashlight. • Extra Food and Water. Pack extra power bars, or trail mix, and extra water to make sure if you are delayed in the wilderness you will have adequate supplies with you. At least one extra day of food is suggested. • Extra Clothing or Shelter. The Emergency Survival Bag is a compact item that is perfect for keeping dry and warm in an emergency. It's olive drab and silver, made of strong metalized material which reflects 90% of body heat. It provides emergency protection in all weather conditions. Prevents and assists treatment of hypothermia. Measures 36" x 84". • Sunglasses and sun screen. Protect yourself from dehydration and sunburn and pack sunglasses even if you are going somewhere cold. Blinding glare from the snow can create critical conditions. • First Aid Equipment. There are many good first aid kits. The best for outdoor search and rescue are the Outfitter Medical Kit, Sportsman Medical Kit, or Hunter Medical Kit. • A Fire Starter of Fire Steel. These are a much safer bet than a standard lighter that might become water logged or lose fluid. • Rope or Cording. Twenty five feet is a good suggestion for how much to have on hand. • Survival Knife and/or Rescue Knife. A good survival knife and good rescue knife or military survival knives can help you more than most of these other items and should be kept close to you in case your other gear gets lost or destroyed. Differences Between a Survival Knife and Rescue KnifeWe suggest carrying both a large survival knife and a military rescue knife. Survival knives are more for general purpose and have sharp points. You'll typically find survival knifes that have clips points, are double edged, and some even have saw backs on the top to help cut small branches and twigs for starting fires. Rescue knives have blunt tips to assure safety if you have to cut someone away from their clothing or seatbelts so you don't puncture them. Some rescue knives have glass breakers which can break glass as easily as cutting butter. Rescue knives, survival knives and knowledge! Remember those three things before you set out on your outdoor adventures!
